Evaluation of the Efficacy of a Probiotic Preparation in Children With Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The CRNSS is now participating in a multicentric study to evaluate the efficacy of a probiotic preparation VSL#3 (Table) in paediatric patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The intervention will be carried out at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi. The study population will be subjects 4-18 years of age who have been diagnosed as having the Irritable Bowel Syndrome according to the internationally accepted criteria.

VSL#3 is a patented probiotic preparation of live freeze-dried lactic acid bacteria containing 450 million lactic acid bacteria per sachet, comprising 8 different strains:

  • Bifidobacterium breve
  • Bifidobacterium longum
  • Bifidobacterium infantis
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus
  • Lactobacillus plantarum
  • Lactobacillus casei
  • Lactobacillus bulgaris
  • Streptococcus thermophilus
